I am working at Signal Mountain Lodge (by Jackson Lake) this summer, and so far have spent 2 nights outside. The first night I hiked a bit towards Signal Mountain and slept in some spacious woods. It was my first time trying out tree straps & whoopie straps instead of rope, and everything went smoothly. My hammock seemed to hang a little tighter in the middle and looser on the ends, if you know what I mean, not sure why. =P I set up after 9pm (sunset) and was in my hammock around 10. I fell asleep then woke up when I heard rustling in the woods. For the next several hours I lay awake, not daring to move, listening to several animals moving and making calls to each other in the woods. Not sure what animals they were, but hopefully they were dangerous ones so my awake hours were not in vain. I had no bear spray and there was food in my backpack, oops...
But ended up falling asleep again and woke around 5:30am to daylight, which promptly returned all of my courage.
Last night I slept about 15 feet from Jackson Lake. Heard no sounds and saw only a deer. Since I had been a bit chilly last time, this time I put on two pairs of socks as well as top & bottom Capilene. But I was still cold! As it turned out, the temps fell to about 35F last night, so considering I did not have a pad, UQ, or TQ, I think I did all right considering...
Our days here have been pretty warm (70s/80s), but it drops to upper 30s/lower 40s at night. So an UQ would probably be a good investment, especially since I want to do some overnights in the canyons, too...
Some pictures of the sunrise this morning are attached. Hopefully I will have more adventures in this beautiful park, that I can share with y'all.
