So is this the stuff we're talking about? Looks like it would be $150 to $160 at Lowes.

You can save a few $$ by using Black Iron Pipe instead of the galvanized.

just a thought, though it will add a few bucks to the plan. what about adding a T-joint and a short Stub to the risers and attaching the 90 elbow to the stub. this will give you a nice little ledge to hang a suspension to. Make a tight dogbone and you would be golden

Hey Womble...did you build your 3/4" stand. If so are you happy with the results? If not, could you post when you complete it? Basically, is it strong enough? It sure seems like it would be to me.

    Thanks, Miguel

Ataris -- you could do that, but i recommend you keep your horizontal compression line as close to the top cross beam as possible. The further away you are (aka the further down the supporting poles you are) the more the potential buckle power increaseth.

I have one of these stands and it is my favorite. Especially for indoor hanging.

Yes, I set it up last Saturday and did a first try. From a material point of view I think it is solid enough. But its stability is limited. Like someone said, it's a bit shaky. Don't let children alone with it without further securing. You can see on the picture that the vertical pipes tend to move forward/backward. On the second try I put it on the grass and attached it with 4 tensioners. That took away some shake. Then I did some turning around in my hammock and managed to make it fall. It needs some more fine-tuning.

Mine is roughly 7' high and 13.5' long. To hang my 11' hammock I have to set the anchor very high. I think I will make it 2' longer to lower the center of mass by adding a small pipe in the middle. That may also help to reduce stress on the middle connector. I also think about bending 4 U shaped pegs to anchor the stands feet to the ground.

That's what I did except I just used the T-joint without the 90 elbow. I wrap the rope around the T-joint.

I'm liking that Mtroxell. I may try replacing the 90* elbows with T-joints.

Loki, this is a picture of the top and bottom of the stands as I modified them. The bottom stands feet were changed so I could go corner to corner instead of wall to wall. Going corner to corner gained me about 4 feet on the indoor stand.
