How practical is it to mount a hammock at high elevation in the Sierra Nevadas...

I've swapped out my tent for a HH and love it!

Anyway... at higher altitudes in the Sierra Nevadas (Yosemite, Seq. NP, etc) there are no real trees and the ones that remain grow SLOW so I don't' want to put any burden on them.

Killing a 500 year old tree accidentally would BREAK my heart!

Anyway... I was thinking about mounting to a rock. Some of these are SOLID and immovable.

How practical is this.... with a few trees it takes me just a couple moments to find a suitable pair.

With rocks I'm not sure how quick it would be...

There are some lakes I want to camp out for some trout fishing which are a bit high up there....

If you can find a good anchor, be it rock or tree or pavilion, use it! Rock climbing cams work great and there are posts on the forums with people doing it.

I recently hung my hammock at 11,300 ft elevation in Arizona. The trees were the old kind: bristlecone pine. I wouldn't worry about uprooting these stalwarts. They have a death grip on the mountain side, and proof of their strength is in the abuse they receive with heavy snows, unbelievable rock slides, etc. As long as the tree is thick enough and alive, you should be fine.
