    Parachute Nylon Hammock Comparison Chart

Over the last year, I've collected most of the parachute nylons out in the market today. I finally (with the help of my kids) sat down and measured each one and put together this chart as a benefit to the hammock community.

If you have a hammock not listed, please contact me so I can add it to the list!

And that was rude of me. Thank you for taking the time to make the chart. It will be helpful for us who are looking at other brands.

I wish we had a chart for the tarps too.

Awesome... That will come in handy I'm sure...

Side note, you have a serious problem... That's way too many hammocks for one person, like a women and shoes, you can only use one/one pair at a time...
Live, Laugh, Love, if that doesn't work. Load, Aim and Fire, repeat as necessary...

Are the DD hammocks parachute nylon? I didn't add my _other_ hammocks -- all the polyester and regular hammocks. Well, I did add two hammocks that should probably come off the list: Anna's Hammock is not parachute nylon and neither is the Kammok. I'll probably take off Anna's, but I think the Kammok is close enough.

If there are some other hammocks that use parachute nylon, please send them my way and I'll get them included.

Ha! Yes, well it all starts innocently enough, and before you know it, the entire closet is full.

When I did a comparative analysis of the Kammok Roo and what I thought was an ENO Double, I noticed a big discrepancy between what ENO said the dimensions of their hammock was, and what I measured. And I found that I could make the Roo come out more or less at the published measurements, but for both hammocks the measurement depends very much on how much one stretches the hammock in either direction. I decided I must have a double after all, but that published dimensions are not so cut and dry.

It would be easier if they'd lay flat even after taking the suspension off so that the body is rectangular, but they don't lay flat and you either measure the lay as you find it or try to "straighten" the hammock fabric out by pulling, and there is a LOT of variance in how far you can pull parachute fabric.

I'm interested then in your measurement methodology as a guide to interpreting your measurements.

    thanks

    Thanks Grizz, and good question.

I found the same thing as you -- nylon stretches, and therefor, depending on how tightly you pull the fabric you can see different results. To be consistent between all the hammocks, I decided to measure the hammocks right along the stitched seams. For hammocks with three panels, this was easily done by measuring between the panels right along the stitches. For the one-panel hammocks, we used the stitches right along the edge.

We found that the stitching doesn't stretch and gave us consistent results each time.

For each hammock, we measured each dimension twice, sometimes three times if my assistants (my kids) pulled the fabric oddly.

I believe our measurements are as objective as possible, although I know that there can be slight variations in builds between a batch of hammocks from a factory.

This does bring up another point, and my pet-peeve about three-panel hammocks. I've already mentioned in multiple posts that the main reason I don't like three-panel hammocks is that my head and feet end up right along the seam when sleeping in the diagonal. As I just mentioned, those seams do not stretch like the fabric does, so it really creates a hard, uncomfortable ridge. At least for me.
