    Why not just do the staked ^\ stand? You would only need the 4x lengths for whatever height is required for your hammock and you could cut those in half and add a sleeve connector. Then you need two stakes of approx. half the overall length of the stand to pound in the ground. That elemenates the turtlelady top bar length... Or even smaller you could come off the miata for one of the sides.

    i like that idea. just use some posts. that might work. saves a lot of space and trouble. the only problems with tying off to a miata is
    (1) there isn't anywhere to tie off to that i am aware of. (2) the miata is pretty low to the ground, and anything sturdy enough to tie off to would put you on the ground.

    If (and I doubt it) you can fit 4' poles in there, you could use this stand or the sections to make another style of stand. The stand packed up in the bag is ~4'-3" x 11" diameter.

    4ft tall sides are kind of short for my ENO, however if you did 2.5-3ft poles with a sleeve to get a total of 5-6ft height you would be set. Make absolutely sure you get it stakes well, don't want that sucker to hit you in the head...

    Have you measured you trunk? Would it fit a couple of 4' pipes? I think there are some good ideas here, but without the actual dimensions, it's tough to really say.

    You are only limited by your wallet and imagination. Have you thought about a small hitch and bike rack? The average bike rack takes three bikes put one on and strap the poles on. If you dig deep enough into the U haul site they will put a hitch on for a very low cost.
    There was an Old Man with a owl,
    Who continued to bother and howl;
    He sat on a rail, And imbibed bitter ale,
    Which refreshed that Old Man and his owl

    That's perfect and even better than the luggage rack as you can take it off when not in use.
