Considering a second underquilt for 3 season camping, am I crazy?

You could always use a light pad and if you ever camp below 0F you can use it to supplement your UQ. It wouldn't even need to to be a pad per se but something like a car window reflector or a piece of that silver bubble wrap insulation.

I'd wait and practice with the UQ you have, so you get really good at adjusting it for various nighttime temperatures. This is not just to get the skill you need to vent it on a hot night and tighten it up again near dawn as the temperature drops - it's also to make sure you can get maximum warmth from it when it's really cold, which is much more important IMO.

Then, you could do the math. How much weight would you save by using a lighter underquilt? How many dollars per ounce of weight saved?

Part of regulating warmth is layering. What do you wear to sleep? How much can you extend the range of your winter UQ by wearing silk long johns, socks, etc.? What if you applied those layers to warm-weather sleeping, by themselves or with a really minimal UQ or sock? The better you understand the equipment you have, the easier it will be to make smart decisions about what to supplement or replace it with. Just knowing for sure what works for you will give you a warm glow.

i appreciate the advice both for an against buying another underquilt. Hammock camping definitely takes pracitice and I've been getiting some.

As I get that practice I am learning what works for me and what doesn't. Plus after suffering through years of the cheapest gear a parent could buy diuring my 8 years in boy scouts some 17 years ago, I have no trouble spending money on quality gear I'll use.

i haven't made up my mind yet, but I'm weighing my options now

There's nothing wrong with saving some weight/space. You certainly don't need a 0* UQ when it's 60* out. If the weight/bulk savings are worth the cost to you then go for it. If not then learn to use what you have to the best of your ability.

You have more than one jacket, right? As winter gets colder, you reach further back in the closet for a warmer jacket. Why wouldn't the same idea work for quilts? . . .

Now that is logic that I can enjoy . . .

. . . a wife on the other hand could use it towards evening shoes . . .

. . . and we know how outta-hand that can get.

Summer shoes and winter boots, and . . .

We all talk about the addiction as though it were a joke . . .
. . . but like gambling, if it goes unchecked, it could even run us towards "Divorce"

I do know someone whose camping supply purchases have only contributed to the separation of wife and state . . . of mind (husbands)
Even though she said Yea Yea sure that's OK, buy it . . .
. . .only to later pay for the purchase in other ways.
