Ever have problems with losing down through the sewing seams/holes?

    Hey all,

As the title says, I'm wondering if anyone has had issues with down finding it's way out of the bag via sewing holes from hemming edges, baffles, etc. I've searched around and didn't come up with any results from previous posts.

So, how many of you have noticed down finding it's way out of your bags, if any?

I understand there are factors involved with needle/thread size, material quality, fill power of the down and so forth, but let's assume you did everything right. You got the right fill power down for the fabric, a brand new needle or two during your project, and no mistakes on hemming.

The reason I ask this is before starting a few larger DIY projects myself, i'd like to see if there would be any value in doing a silicone coating on the seams (or something similar). With the only risks I see being a slight discoloration of the fabric near the seams if one is not careful, and a negligible weight increase.

So let's hear your thoughts from those who have the experience! Is it worth the extra effort?

I don't work with down. But I would think French seams and rolled seams would seal things up quite well. That would be my approach in any event.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Thanks, RR! Those are my standard seams, and they've never failed me yet. I'm sure I am over-thinking this, but it just seems to me that regardless of the seam, the down still has direct access to the thread holes somewhere.

It seems to me that this would have been brought up in the past if it really was an issue, or I guess it could have gone completely unnoticed by everyone

    Bump!
