ex kentuckian here. i still bleed blue and white though I'm from Greenville and lived in Hoptown (hopkinsville) for awhile. Now live in Chattanooga, TN. If there is a hang that someone plans i would love to make it home sometime.

We GOTTA get this gathering off the ground

There seems to be lots of interest in getting this group together but no one wants to take the lead. I've not managed to complete a full night hang in my back yard, so I don't feel qualified to lead, however...

I don't mind volunteering but the total volume of what I know about hanging would fit in a shot glass.

If you're willing to accept my limitations, I would suggest that we begin with a list of places here in KY that we know about where we could consider for a gathering of this group. Since I've never been, I can only rely on my limited camping experience, so I'll offer:

    Levi Jackson State Park
Land Between the Lakes (some additional parks in the immediate vicinity)
    Mammoth Cave State Park

I know that there are a lot more places, but I just want to get the ball rolling and see if y'all will kick in some ideas. I've been to these three places, but it's been a while so I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending them without some preliminary scouting. For example, we stayed in a cabin at LBL so I can't judge the camping facilities, but I did see some other motorcycle campers on the South side of the big bridge that spans the lake and they looked like they had a good set up for tents. Not too many trees though, so that'd be a problem for a group of any size. My other consideration would be access to food unless we are talking about truly camping/hanging.

I've camped with a group where participants volunteered to host one meal for the three day outing. I didn't much enjoy that option because not too many people are very skilled at planning meals for larger groups and simple cooking a large meal requires a lot of gear as well as coordination to make everything come together to serve a group something hot to eat. I'd rather share a hike, fishing afternoon, or a campfire at the end of an evening.

So, I know that I'm probably over analyzing this entire deal, but here are my thoughts:
Simple, cheap (inexpensive), separate meals, convenient-easy to find location...what say you?

    Central KY Gathering

There are a couple of camp sites that are much closer to my home that I am planning to scout out in advance of anyone suggesting anywhere else. I've never been to these places so I won't even mention them by name, but I always need a destination for riding my motorcycle, so I will be able to use my riding time productively. I'll let y'all know what I find out...stay tuned.

FYI, I'm riding out of Crab Orchard.

my family used to camp at Canal campground at LBL every summer when i was younger. i love that place. i wonder if they allow hammocks? and knoth's bbq if if is still around was friggin awesome. they made awesome burgers and milkshakes and ofcourse killer bbq. other places to consider would be lake malone, lake barkley, and the pennyrile state park. all of them have camping.

In the Red River Gorge is a campground called Koomer Ridge. Nice place if you don't want to hike. Plenty of trees and good improved, yet semi primitive sites. Might make for a good group hang spot.

My first, and so far only hang was here.

I've only done the Mammoth Cave National Park for three nights. Each night we camped along the Green River at a different location. No hiking was involved as I always kayak camp. The back country flood plain camping passes cost $0.00 so it wouldn't be hard on the budget.
I'm just throwing this out there for you all to consider.
