Man, I sure wish I could join you! Kings Canyon is my favorite place on earth (so far). I would consider the Rae Lakes Loop for a fantastic, challenging-but-not-too-difficult "taste" of the park, the John Muir Trail, the Pacific Crest Trail, 11,900+ Glen Pass and some amazing fishing.
Whatever trail you choose, you will surely have the time of your life!

Mountains have a dreamy way
Of folding up a noisy day
In quiet covers, cool and gray.

Surely, God could have made a better way to sleep.
Surely, God never did.
I was definitely looking at Rae Lakes Loop. I've been out there three times in the last four years, my trip fell thru last year and this year. But I'll be out there this year even if it means going solo.
I'll be in Sequoia in August too. Isn't it great when your kids can take you on vacation )

"Climb the mountains and get their good tidings.
Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees.
The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy,
while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn." — John Muir
We did the Rae Lakes Loop 3 summers ago and it is stunning!
Glenn Pass I think was our high point. One of the members hiking with us
celebrated his 50th year anniversary on the loop, meaning 50 years prior he had done the same hike...he was 82!
EagleJ, I've walked with you I have NO doubt.
Plus the Rae Lakes Loop like a lot of the PCT is graded (mostly) for pack animals, so you have 10k feet of gain but its gentle
That's a beautiful stretch eagle. Me and some of my hiking buddies have walked all over that area at one time or another. I had a trip to Utah scheduled for August 4th that I had to cancel due to travel expenses but might be able to go to Kings Canyon or Sequoia. My best hiking buddy might be able to go August 11th. Let me know if you'll be headed our way and we might be able to join you for a stretch. Oh and since I hike at a glacial speed if I get on your nerves you don't have to work too hard to ditch me.
Happy Trails to one and all.
Enjoy the outdoors wisely and elevate your perspective.
