I was wondering as far as activities go, if it would be possible for some instruction on basic navigation skills? Maybe some map/compass/gps basic skills? I'm sure maybe there are a few in the group who are skilled at that. I know I, as well as some other new hikers would benefit from something like that. Just a thought.

My brother has a tree service and I am going to try to get some wood to bring with me. It might not be the best but I will bring it just in case we run short. We could use it at night for heat anyway....

Compass is relatively easy to learn and a great basic skill, better skill than GPS in case the batteries die or it breaks.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

    Nav training

I wouldn't mind teaching some navigational skills. I have found old school protractors and ranger beads online but I am having trouble finding maps with grid lines on them 1:50K or 1:100K or even 1:40K... If someone knows where to get topo maps with lines on it please let me know.... I taught NAV skills in the Army for 10 years

You can make your own here. They save in .pdf format and are printable at your local shop on their large-format printer (or, if you're willing to do a lot of taping...).

I'd love to learn more'n I already know about navigating with a map and compass. I'm good to be able to find major landmarks via azimuth, assuming that I have an idea of where I'm starting from, but distances have always been my Achilles' heel off-trail. On-trail, I can usually estimate via time, but bushwhacking throws that out the window.

Shannon, sounds like you're the man for the job! I know some basic stuff already. I was in Boy Scouts, but that was many moons ago. With old age and lack of putting it to use, most of it escapes my memory now. I've been trying to read up on it lately, but some hands on training would be nice.

If you can get some extra stack it in your back yard and bring it to the sherpa hang... it might be a bit more cured by then
