    Giant tarp question

    Hello hanging friends,

I'm looking for a giant tarp to serve as basecamp for an expedition of twelve people. Each hanger will sleep under his own tarp, but the kitchen and common area need to go under something a lot larger. I've looked at the cheap heavy duty nylon tarps at the hardware store, but I need something just as big but much more lightweight.

Any thoughts on this will be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,

    R

Cheap, easy to pitch in a multiple of configurations but maybe not a light as you'd like.

Our scout troop has a 15' x 30' nylon flag we engineered into a nice troop kitchen shelter. We received it for free! Where do you get a strong light 15' x 30' colourful nylon tarp for free?

I assume in the USA as in Canada you see these large flags at shopping malls, town halls and historical sites. These flags blow in the wind all day and over time the edge gets frayed. These flags are too expensive to just throw out so they are repaired and cleaned. After several repairs and cleanings the original flag has faded and the repair is obvious. When this happens the flags needs to be replaced and if you have the contacts you can pick up the flag for free.

When we are at Jamborees every one knows we are in camp by our kitchen. When we travel internationally we are proud of our Canadian Flag. It is a little hard to keep it from touching the ground.

There is also Cooke Custom Sewing and their Tundra Tarps which they offer in 1.1 silnylon 1.9oz nylon.

I've also seen an old military parachute used a group rain shelter. If you look at the video on this page you will see the parachute deployed over their fire pit.
