You know, they make cuben fibre tarps these days, no need to carry one made in stone! :-D Have to admit I'd be slightly afraid that the rock formation would choose exactly that moment to come tumbling down on me if hanging underneath..

That there is a cool picture! Did you do a horizontal panorama?

I tried to take photos of it but it's not really possible without a wide angle lens or finding some better vantage point on a neighbouring hillside. I couldn't fit the whole thing into a frame, and panoramas got distorted.
The thing is more than 30 m wide and there are steep slopes on either side so you can't just walk further away.
Here's a photo I took from the bottom of the valley where we started our hike, it gives you an idea of how big it is if it's so clearly visible from so far away:

There are good photos on the net, just image search monte forato. It is a spectacular rock formation.

Merci! It was indeed aspectacular view - one of those that is nigh-on impossible to do justice to in a photo.. This is from the same vantage point as that pic, looking "to the right" of it:

How far apart are those trees, and how high did you have to put your tree straps? I have never seen a hang so wide.

id say 25 feet. i just put my straps as high i could reach. not the best hanging trail as it's semi alpine, and they try to make you stay in the usually treeless campsites.

My testing area. While it's not in my back yard, it's only a 20 mine walk from the car.
