For joining rope, the Zeppelin Bend. Just learned it a few years ago, and what a great knot it is. Easy and fun to tie, attractive, and easy to untie after being loaded. I've heard that it weakens the rope minimally.

Depending on your pole, you might consider the Timber Hitch. Fast and easy to tie, and incredibly easy to untie. It relies on friction with the object, however, and may not work for your application. Works well on trees - I use it for clotheslines, tarps, bear buckets, etc.

    1. sheet bend for lines of different diameter, though it will work fine for equal dia.
    1. square knot for equal dia.
    1. For me, I have a tiny bowline loop on the ends of most of my lines. I connect lines together with these and the running end. This allows quick connect/disconnect and I rarely ever untie the bowlines.

    2. Bowline for strength and non slippage.
    2. Tautline hitch for adjustability.
    2. clovehitch for around very small diam poles, and its cousin the constrictor(don't expect to untie this one, instead either slide it off or break the stick.
