    Best knots

I need suggestions on best knots to 1.) Tie 2 ends of rope together 2.) Tie a rope around a pole. Need knots that are less apt to slip.

I'm a figure 8 fan, but there are too many too even list. Check out animatedknots.com they have everything up by category and it's pretty idiot proof to watch how it's done and then do it.

The Clove hitch is probably the easiest for tying off to a pole or standing object it's also nice because it is easily adjustable and won't tighten up under a load and become difficult to untie. For security when you are all adjusted you can add a simple overhand knot.

    Knots

    To tie two ropes together
    - double fisherman's knot
    - sheet bend

    Around an object
    -clove hitch
    -bowlin
    -retracing 8

If you wanted the line to be tight that is rigged to the pole a " modified truckers hitch is the way to go.

I like the zeppelin bend for joining cordage.

If tying rope to a pole for a tarp--larkshead on one side, trucker's hitch on the other.

If tying rope to a pole for suspension--clove hitch is an old reliable, but I like to get a piece of rope or mule tape that's long enough to prussic to the pole, then attach my suspension via marlinspike. The prussic (once tightened and loaded) stays put for me, and if I don't like the height, I can raise or lower it easily to where I want it. If the pole is super slick, you may have to add extra loops in your prussic.
You're gonna need a bigger hammock

The trucker's hitch from animated knots (above) is also a good one.
