    Climashield UQ

I have watched Eric's video and read several other accounts of using the climashield for an UQ. Is it necessary to sew it to one or both panels (top and bottom ripstop)? I was thinking of just sewing all the channels and top and bottom together and sliding in the Climashield and using quilting yarn to quilt it. Say 3-4" in from each edge and then on 8-10" spacing to keep it from bunching? It sounds sound anyone ever try it? It seem like it would just be way easier on the sewing and leave only one end to finish. Any thoughts? I was thinking you could always rip the one end open and add more climashield and only have to re quilt it. Small job compared to a whole new quilt.

Sewing the parimiter is far better. Climashield does not need quilting and it will separate the layers of the insulation to a slight degree. Simply sewing around the edges will secure the climashield well enough to stabilize it and keep it from shifting around. The edges will stay warm where with only the quilting it will slouch inside the quilt creating gaps and cold spots.

I agree with Paul. I have sewn the entire perimeter making. Climashield quilts and they are rock solid after that.

I was afraid of that. I had hoped to just buzz out a couple of shells and then fill them with whatever CL was on sale. Figured it would be easy just to do the loops ever couple of inches to hold it in place. Has anyone done it that way?

    Thanks guys,

I had noticed that you turn the CL down against the presser foot. I had wondered if you might want to sew thru maybe a 1" wide strip of RS on top of the CL?

When sewing it we layer the clima then the shell layer ripstop ten the liner. Then pin, pin, and more pining around the perimeter to hold it all in place. The foot never meets the Clima and feeds just fine. When you make the turn (inside it out) the liner will have more space to travel to go around the edges making it smaller than the outer shell layer, creating a semi differential effect.

Honestly having done it both ways....it's way less work than quilting loops. And is a far better, warmer and more durable quilt in the end....but hey we've only made a few thousand.

So you have the Climashield on top then? I mean the presser foot rests on the Climashield then below that are the layers of ripstop and then the feed dogs? The reason I asked is that I watched a video by Eric and for someraeson his views was it gets all tangled,

No the climashield is on the bottom. The foot will grab it if it's on top....but won't if it's on the bottom. Layer it layer out on the floor just like I said and run it through the machine the same way, don't flip or turn it.
