I have a decent digital video camera we could use...records to mini-dvd's or uploads directly to PC through USB.

Ed does several campouts a year...that would be a great place to do a lot of the filming.

good idea.... we will be glad to participate....

Actually JRB has plans to do several vidoes on the how to and tips ...similiar to the articles and directions on our web site.... it just hasn't make it to top of the list with the work on the new quilts, hammock tents and hammock...plus growth in production capability to keep our growing number of customers warm and comfortable....Hopefully we will get to some of these videos by this Spring.

ya know, ed's "south east hammock hanger's association" (SEHHA) camp out at Hot Springs, NC, would be a great place to do some of the filming.
of course it would also be good to do some at trail days too, because of the opportunities there, but the hot springs camp out would be much quieter, less distracted.
and as we worked on the filming, we wouldn't be missing out on all the other stuff we would also want to do at trail days.
several attempts may be needed get what we want on some segments.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

If anyone sees a problem with this please let me know.
Idealy you could do with hosting a youtube version and a direct download high quality version. (Getting some space for the download version might be a problem but I *might* be able to help there.)

An alternative HQ version to Youtbe is getting of the ground now http://stage6.divx.com
This gives a high quality easily downloadable alternative. I'm not sure if its embeddable though. Videos have to be in divx though and takes longer to upload to stage 6. Videos can be longer than 10 minutes though.

    A hammock video

Qualities not great on this one actually, garbage in, garbage out right?

Youtube and stage6 both have Group/channels, having a hammock group/channel would be a good way to group the videos and others submitted by forum members.

finally a few thoughts on improving the quality of videos uploaded to youtube

I can host it on my website and link to it from HF.

I'll throw my hand in to help. I will also be hiking. With a couple of us thru hiking, I wonder if there is some way we could incorporate it into a video. My nest is the only stock thing I will have though.

That is a really good idea getting the Jacks, Ed Speer, Tom H., and Patrick into it. Maybe neo can contact Tom Clayor about his hammocks and see what happens.

It would be really cool to have the video start with "Hi we/I am/are (Jacks, Ed, Tom, Patrick, etc) and this is my product and how to use it. That would have the wow factor that would really set this apart. For their time we could give them a copy for their websites.

Having the jacks show the wearable options would be nice along with Ed Speer's pea pod options.

I think something we should look at is showing all of the commercial options out there. I think that would be the most useful. Showing all of the options and letting the viewer determine which one they like best.

I think that we should plan to do the majority of the of the filming at Ed's hammock gathering in Hot Springs, NC.

    Pan,
Do you think that either you or smee could make it to this gathering, even if it's for a few hours to get you on film?

It seems there is plenty of support for something like this and people willing to help out. So the next question is what tutorials do we want to get on video and what do we want to cover in each one?

    Suggestions for what to film:

    • Various underquilt lash-ups
    • How to dial in and hang an underquilt
    • Hennessy Knot
    • Slap straps, etc.
    • Tarps and how to adjust for certain conditions (Windy, Rainy, Cold, Hot
This is by no means defintive but at least a starting point. I don't think we really want to get to deeply into this as it really could be a website and project that takes a life of it's own before we realize it. So we really need to think about this much like packing our packs before a large hike.

What do we really need and what is fluff that would be nice?

That's a good start. I say a whole bunch of 1 min videos is better than one 5-6 minute one.

    How about.

    HH knot
    Speer knot
    hanging a HH
    hanging a Speer
    Importantace of sag
    Explaining a diagonal
Attaching the tarp to the tree
Staking the tarp out for a storm
showing the need for bottom insulation
HH SS if someone has one
    Underquilt
    Pea Pod
    How to use snake skins
    ways to pack a hammock
