Question Highlands, NC area -gathering intel for future hang/hikes

I opened this thread in hopes of gathering information about campsites, campgrounds, hammocking and hiking near Highlands, NC from HammockFourms members.

The area around Highlands, NC seems to be a DayHiker's paradise and I am interested in hammocking during both DayHIkes and weekend long trips near Highlands, NC.

Have you been there? Have you discovered any links already on HammockForums.net about this area?

My plans are to make trips to this area soon so I will start new 'Trip Planning' threads for any of those trips - hoping to be exploring in this area during 2nd half of August and first half of September, 2012.

Let me know if you have any interest or tips to share - Thanks!

-moderators I'm a newbie so just let me know if this needs to be moved to another forum - thanks! -

The Foothills Trail (click here: FHT) is a wonderful area with Lake Jocassee, Table Rock, Caesar's Head, the Chatooga River, Jocassee Gorges, and many other wonderful features. There are LOTS of hiking and backpacking choices in that area. And it's just down the road from you over in South Carolina (Pickens County, I believe)

Standing Indian Campground, not too far from Highlands, has a variety of day- and weekend hiking options.

    Thanks BigRed77!
Panthertown looks like a place with many excellent hammock hang spots. I found this trails map too, http://files.wncoutdoors.info/panthe..._june22_09.pdf
The views off the top of Hogback Mountain have got to be stupendous with that escarpment on its southern face.

    Thanks Pips!
I think, as a start, i have to add camping in my hammock at Table Rock's primitive walk-in camping area (located near Lake Oolenoy) to my todo list. Foot Hills Trail WOW lots to do!

PS: Love my "Pips Hammock Level" sheer genius that idea of yours.

Lightbulb Its too hot in the Piedmont!

Its too hot in the Piedmont!

I'm heading to the Highlands, NC area for some altitude-induced coolness this weekend.

3200' to 5000' peaks and valleys --now That is where to hang a hammock in the summer.

The Plan is to complete three day hikes and Geo-Tag some hammock hang sites along the way.
It is really neat when the trail description begins, "Park your car in downtown Highlands..." ... and you end up on a mountain peak.

Thanks to everyone for the tips! Great areas and I will be checking out some of them this weekend.

    Sector "H" Recon trip begins...
