    Hey all from Eastern Canada!!!

    Good day all,

First off my handle tinstar77... as Im in law enforcement and have been for several years, prior to that I was Military for a short time (Too hard on the family life).

I LOVE the outdoors and get out on day and over night hikes as often as I can without neglecting the fam. to much!!!

I am a new hanger!! I received my hammock from my wife for Christmas this year (as per my request)... I received a Hennesy Hammock with the Hex cover!! I love it so much I convinced a young officer in my office to get one to, we now hike together often!!

I was an avid ground sleeper until this year!! much happier now!!

HOWEVER, loving it a side I am (as well as my friend) are running into 1 issue...I believe its referred to as "Cold *** Syndrome"... haha

Its been cool at night this summer (5 degrees Celsius) , VERY hot during the day (30 degrees Celsius) !! the problem for me is I am fighting the suggestions for an under quilt etc. due to the added weight of several pounds, at present I am carrying around 30lb with my H2O and my pack is at max capacity!! are there any solutions that are light weight?? thanks all.

Glad to be part of the group!!

    welcome!
What are you using to keep warm at the moment?
maybe you can modify it or use it a little differently.

    Welcome.

The underquilt isn't that heavy, and it is the best thing that we've found to keep us warm. A foam pad works too, and it is extremely inexpensive relative to a UQ. The UQ just feels more comfortable, breathable, and enveloping.

Take a look at Jack's-R-Better wearable quilts. Those can be used as a TQ, UQ, or Serape, making the weight less of a concern as other clothing can be left at home.

    Welcome Tinstar

First of all welcome fellow Canadian hanger from Ontario.

To answer your question about the underquilt being to heavy. That is not the case. Most of the underquilts available from the hammock vendors all use high fill power down and lightweight fabrics which in turn makes them pretty light.

What are you using for insulation now? I suspect it is your ground pad and sleeping bag from your ground dwelling days? If that is the case, then you can lighten your load and increase your comfort if you think of your insulation as splitting your sleeping bag in half (top and bottom). Most use a top quilt and underquilt or pad of some sort for insulation.

Keep on reading the forums here. There is a wealth of knowledge in the pages.

    Cheers

    Brian

Welcome to the forum. The Yeti UQ is only 12.5 oz and should get you down to around freezing. For most folks once you go to an UQ there's no going back.

Welcome to the forum tinstar77, from another East coaster.

As said before an under quilt and over quilt combined, weigh about as a sleeping bag.

    Thanks All.

Sounds like the under quilt is the most common option.

Right now I am using a small summer sleeping bag, rated for 7+ Celsius.
I purchased a thermal blanket similar to a space blanket but reusable, foil on one side and nylon on other, thinking the foil would help reflect some body heat back and prevent the wind from blowing through!! No luck!! it was a bit warmer but not much and it was loud to sleep on!!

May have to try out an under quilt.

    thanks again all.
