    Texas LST Butt Bake 8-17 / 8-19

Sarge, merge any details from the original thread that you think might be useful here!

Lone Star Trail Section 1. Near Huntsville.

Looks the best place to park is going to be Sandy Branch Parking Lot. According to the trail guide, it should be N30* 30.637 / W95* 45.420. Several of us are coming out Friday afternoon, but come on out anytime during the weekend.

You would head west from Lot #2. About .2 mile from the parking lot there is a trail intersection (red route) right after a stream crossing where you would turn left, then ross another stream about 480 feet from the intersection. About .2 miles from that is another trail intersection. This is the highest point in the immediate area---370 feet. Its about 30 feet higher than the parking lot and 60 feet higher than the lowest point at the stream bed. Good landmark, .2 mile from a watersoure, and likelynsome good hanging spots omn the slope for convetive breezes.

Whaddya think? My only concern would be for folks arriving after sundown.

Anybody got a supply of glow sticks?

I can't make this, but it's tempting just because of the name

    Topo Map of local area.

Copies of LSHT Trail guide for this section

    Driving Directions:

If you put the address 24830 Bethel Road, Richards TX into Google Earth or Google Maps, you should be taken to the corner of Bethel Road (FS211) and FM149 (it worked for me, which is wierd because thats not the address). Somebody please try this and tell me if it worked. Parking lot #2 is south of this intersection. Bethel Road goes straight south and is paved for 1 mile until it gets to the house at 15870 Bethel Road, Richards, TX (this might work in your GPS, it doesn't in Google Earth and Google Maps), at which point it takes a sharp 90* turn to the right and then again to the left where it again heads generally south. Parking Lot #2 is 1/2 mile south of this second turn. Street view works for the entire length of Bethel Road, so you can "drive" down it on your computer until you see the parking lot and signs on your right.

Trail Head #1 is approximately 2.14 miles to the west of Bethel Road, and Trail Head #3 is approximately 2 3/4 miles to the east. The trail guide gives GPS Coords for each.

Hiking Directions to camp site from Trailhead #2:

Looking at the Topo Map, the three trailheads are shown with a letter "P". Trailhead #1 is furthest west, #2 in the center, and #3 is furthest east. You will also note that there are two distinct colors and lines shown for the trails. The main LSHT is shown as a solid red line, loops and shortcuts are shown as blue dashed lines.

If you go just west of Trailhead #2, you will see where a dashed blue line interescts with the red line and travels west southwest until it reaches a junction with another blue dashed line. This is the general area where we will be camping, near the crest of the hill just north of that intersection. We won't know which side of that hill it will be until we get there and find out what direction the wind (if any) is coming from. If there is no wind to speak of, we'll try for the flat area just north of the intersection, close to where the intermittent stream is shown coming from the hillside. Follow the directions Mwil3 posted in the OP to get there. I'll see if I can get a double handful of glow sticks to mark the route for those who arrive after sundown.

If anyone has Garmin Base Camp, these trails are shown, but not named. I'll post the coords of the way points when I get home tonight.

An overview video of the LSHT is here.

This guy seems to know a bit about the LSHT as well.

    General driving directions:

Get to Montgomery, TX on TX HWY 105 west of Conroe, and take FM 149 North. Trailhead #1 is 9 miles from Montgomery, Bethel Road (FS211) at about 7.5, and #3 at about 5. All of them will be on the left if you are driving north.
