    You need to scan the DIY forum for underquilts. Study each design. In most cases they will tell you why each thing is done.

    As to temperature rating, I use this formula:
    Temperature = 68 - (18 x thickness)

    Temperature is Fahrenheit and thickness is inches.

    To determine how much down you will need multiply the width times length times thickness of the quilt and then divide by the fill power rating of your down. Then make your baffle height 1" less than the thickness.

    On an UQ don’t forget the outer shell MUST be larger than the inner or the loft will be smashed out. Learned that form my first build.

    Is it simple? It can be. Or it can be a real pain in the tuckus for a non-mathlete. Simple quilts are simple. Which is why they are referred to as "simple" quilts. Sewn through baffles or synth fill makes it really quite easy. _But_ when you get into cold weather quilts for winter camping you start getting into differential cuts and box versus z baffles and other really fun confusion. The essential construction is reasonably simple as long as you take your time and follow the directions carefully. It's the design that can get difficult.
    I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.
