Ring Buckle Supports

I just substituted 1" polyester webbing for my 1" nylon tubular webbing and noticed the polyester showing some distinct crush marks from the rings. The polyester is rated at 3500 lbs and the rings are made by SMC from REI. Anyone else notice these marks?

Not sure what you mean by crush marks. I have noticed that the tooth of the webbing has become smoother along stress points, i.e. rings and end loops.

I must be using the same stuff as you (1" polyester webbing and SMC rings). I found that after a lot of use the surface of the webbing, where it attaches to the rings, gets scuffed just a bit but it hasn't seemed to weaken the strength of the strap yet. And this is after many many many hangs.

I've been using the rings and the Speer "strappage" and have noticed some compression of the straps after a while. Not thinking it's too worrisome though.

I'm about to get to try some buckles from blackbishop that he has been trying for a while to get me to try. (The REI descending rings were on back-order so it's a good time to try different things

)

I'll have to post differences/similarities "compare and contrast" between the two systems.

I tend to keep my hammock set up for weeks in the basement for naps, and I'm afraid that having the same setup day after day might start compressing the straps in the same places over time. So I guess I'm testing whether that's a worry or not as well. Hard concrete floor under me, so absolute failure of the system would be painful.

So far the rings have let me down (rather gently and fairly gradually) only when I didn't have the straps lined up in them sufficiently, now I tie a half hitch in the strap to be sure they stay lined up. I'm thinking of making some velcro loop bands just to keep the straps lined up together, kind of like on your watchband or belt.

I feel you there. When I'm playing around with my hammock stand, I pile up pillows and blankets underneath. Learned this one the hard way.

I guess scuff marks and some shine would describe it pretty good. I will give it a try out back tonight. Wind, storms and possibly heavy rain, yummy!!! Should test the BlackCat as well.

Do I understand it correctly that you have a set of descending rings at each end of the hammock?
I have just about finished building my first and want to use this system.

I do not use the caribiner. The first time I did this I notices that the webbing fused together, but it was able to be pulled apart. The next few times of sleeping in the hammock over night, I have not noticed this. The caribiner adds some convenience, but imo not enough to warrant its use.
