    field report

I'm just back from a two week motorcycle trip, with every night but three spent hanging.

I had bought strap and rings before leaving, but couldn't find carabineers to suit me. At my first stop in Bethesda, MD I went to REI and bought a pair of the 22 knm rated units.

I have to say that the system really rocks.

After I learned how to eyeball the strap/rings alignment for a good hold (I got rappelled to the ground a time or two. NO harm, no foul) I was good to go.

I have a ridge line, so setup became a snap.

I just read the comment about being hard to unfasten.

I found that pulling the loose end of the strap to the side made loosening easy . (the exact opposite of how you insure the straps are aligned with the buckles to insure there is no slipping)

    miles of smiles

    Tom

If I were you I'd worry about those figure-9 thread guys. They aim to put the ring buckles out of business!

I sure hope when the JRB Bridge is sighted again, someone is there with a camera taking lots of pictures, and loads them up on this site. What design tradeoffs did they go with? What problems did they solve that we hack-abouts haven't even recognized yet? How much does it weigh?

    Finally cut the cords

I finally took the leap and cut the stock support cords on my HH yesterday to add the ring buckle setup and I have to say I absolutely love it so far. Thanks to this thread I won't be tying that goofy HH knot anymore. I contemplated the carabiner on the tree side versus feeding through the sewn loop in the webbing for quite some time (because I'm a gram weenie) and I have to say the convenience of the carabiner may just be worth the extra weight for me. By tying the slip knot and assuring the webbing is lined up I have yet to be dropped (knock on wood.) I plan to test it out on a trip later this week. Thanks to all who have come up with, developed, and tested this setup and contributed to this thread. Great stuff!

See it was'nt so bad...a little snip here...a little snip there...
I've got other names for that Hennessy knot and tree huggers but I'll try to be nice. Let us know how the test goes.

wamyteipen... i really like the biner on the end loop, not only to protect the webbing from abrasion but because it's just so easy.
unless the webbing is wet & i don't want to pack it w/ the hammock, i just leave it threaded through the rings.
    set up is a snap.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

I use the biner on the foot end to hang my pack from. Makes it fairly easy to get stuff when I need it.
    Peace,
