With the loop you can just wrap the tree, thru the loop and thru the rings, but you have to take the strap off the rings and a carabener makes it faster to put up and take down. Also you don't have to worry about leaving a strap behind when you pack everything up.

if there is a loop in the end of the tree strap, why is the carabiner needed?

why not just wrap the tree, thru the loop, and thru the rungs?

sorry if thats a dumb one, but im looking at converting, and not getting it!

    thanks!
Not a dumb question. It has been asked before. If you dont use the biners, you'll have to take the webbing off the rings, wrap the webbing thru the loop, then back thru the rings everytime you set-up. The biners make it much simpler and quicker.

You might consider buying a couple of 1" cinch buckles to see if you like them better.http://www.onrope1.com/store/index.p...&parent=4&pg=1
They do have a $10 minimum order though. 4 rings will run you around $10. Since AngrySparrow sent me a couple to try out, I have switched out all my hammocks from rings to cinch buckles. Try both and see which you prefer.

I used the ring Buckle setup all weekend at the MAHHA hang. All 3 of the hammocks I had up never slipped because of the rings, I don't do a knot with the webbing. My sons were rocking in thier hammocks and they held just fine. The only issue I had was cutting the zip tie I use to hold the whipping to short, had both ends of mine break but I was able to replace because I brought extra ties to rewhip my one son's hammock. Both times they broke because I plopped down in the hammock instead of sitting, both falls were slow and I was able to laugh before I hit the ground.
I also used ring buckles at MAHHA this weekend. My girlfriend sewed my hammock from a Speer Kit but we modified it from the very beginning to the Ring Buckles. They worked flawlessly. I always tie a quick slip knot ahead of the rings as a safety precaution. This method is so simple and makes set up so fast that I'm sold on the whole concept.

Why no knot with the rings?

First night I setup in the dark after a 4 hour drive, I didn't even setup tarps until the acorns started to land next to me. I probably will do a knot from now on.

Once they were up and we slept in them the first night I didn't even think about it the rest of the trip.

...a quick question about ring buckles in general...

Could I simply tie the stock HH suspension line to the buckles or is the thinner line required?

As long as you're able to laugh after you hit the ground, you're ok.

Yeah, once was my son who plopped on my lap so we could read together, the other was in the middle of the night after watering some bushes.
