This being my first post I feel it is appropriate that I post in this thread. I spent the weekend reading every post.
I received my HH Ultralight and straps from Strapworks. No SMC rings yet. Couldn't stand it went to hardware store and picked up 4 steel ring. Set it up a sprayed it down with permetheim. I'll hang in the yard till I get my SMC's. then it is off to do some quite water kakaking ADK's and Vt.

Looking to switch from straps (Speer-style) to a ring buckle system.

    Issues:

    1) I use 1 1/2" instead of 1" straps. Any potential issues?
    2) Depending on the time of year, my weight tends to fluctuate b/t 230-270. What kind of cord should I use to connect from hammock to ring buckle? Will Ed's spectra cord be strong enough?

I'm eager to compare my rings to a whoopie sling. I like eliminating hardware.

    That's a great idea - but then I'm biased

I have to say I have learned more over the last few days about hammocking than I could tell you.

I have a HHExplorer Delux and got the Blue Lashings from Harbor Freight and the SMC rings and have implemented supports as shown in this picture

I will be taking the maiden voyage tonight and hope to have a great nights sleep.. I am still establishing the trust factor between me and my hammock..

Owning an Explorer I would have no problem trusting the hammock now. Although I do confess to making my daughter be the first in my very first hammock. I could not believe my lard butt would stay up. That said... I'd need some extra experience before I would trust a treeless hang. We all have our limits.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

It seems pretty solid, I really have no reference point to go off of, but I'm going anyways. If I end up on the ground then so be it.. I shall move forward!

The theory is very sound and others have had success. I am sure it would only take me a couple of tries to commit to it. I've even considered doing it myself. But...... I might need my daughter to run interference for me first..
