Go to a sewing store and spend $100. It won't be the best machine, but it should work until you decide to go crazy like me. One day everything in my pack will be homemade. In fact, my trail name probably should be homemade. I am even eating homemade granola right now.

I would love to have that trail name, but I feel I should get a trail name while on the trail.

Oh and speaking of names... I would like to clarify my user id
lvleph that first letter is actually an L. lvl is 1337 for M, and so lvleph=Meph, which is short for Mephistopheles.

Fair enough and thanks for the clarification. I'd wondered about that in all honesty. Hey, I just noticed I'm a senior member now!

I was wondering about your trail name too, not that I'm any less confused now than before. I guess I'll have to look up "Mephistopheles".

OK, I looked up "Mephistopheles" on Wilikpedia. Which of these definition relates:
    1. "He who shuns the light."
    2. "Pungent, sulphurous, stinking, and noxious exhalation from the ground."

EDIT: The real purpose of the user id is summed up well in wikipedia's entry for The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus

$100 should get you a good machine. If you want to spend I little more, I spent $250 an got a killer machine from the late 50's.

On the homemade thing I am working on it. The materials for the quilts should be in tomorrow or the next day. The down should be in next week. Now all that is left is to start making clothes. I am thinking of making the thru-hiker down jacket next month before I leave. Rain gear and hiking clothes will have to wait until this winter.
Is that too much to ask? Girls with frikkin' lasers on their heads?

I spent $400 and I am glad I did. My $99 one sucked. I could never get the tension right.
