    help from north eastern MN

looking for some advice, am hoping to get out camping in northeastern MN soon, by that, I mean along the shores of Lake Superior. I know there are all sorts of state parks along the north shore but do any of you guys know of any little hidden treasures along the way? Am not a hiker am planning a three day kayak excursion and am hoping someone knows of some decent campsites along the lakeshore. Anywhere from say, Lutsen to Duluth would be awesome (I'd love to paddle in Duluth at night -- on my bucket list)
    Thanks in advance : )

Hey Deb; Probably farther than you want to go , as its in Wisconsin , but the Apostle islands park looks great. Here's a quick vid, and if your local kayak outfitter has vid's for rent check out "This is the sea" #4 part 2 Lake Superior, there's a whole chapter on it and frankly it made me drool.

Debi, my wife and I found this a few years back and consider it one of the most intriguing waterfalls in the eastern U.S.http://gowaterfalling.com/waterfalls/devilskettle.shtml

Devil's Kettle shot from first week of Oct. in 2010. I was about a week late for peak leaf color up there, but it was still a beautiful week wandering around between Grand Marais and Split Rock Lighthouse SP.

That's a nice shot of the falls scubacat. I stood there for awhile contemplating the millions of gallons and tons of debris that have entered that hole since the last ice age ... and finally just had to walk away!

No one has determined where it goes!

Kettle River in Banning State Park. Used to canoe up there a lot. Really cool, single camp site on the island at the head waters of one of the rapids. All you can hear is the sound of rushing waters.

Not too far south of Duluth.

For campsites along the shore you could try the lake superior water trail.

    http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/kayaking/lswt/maps.html

It's got a long ways to go to be finished but it sure beats the state park zoo.

If you're looking for a place to goof off on your way to Duluth, (must have high winds for this) you could ride a few waves on stoney point between knife river and french river (pretty close to halfway between Duluth and two harbors). I go surfing there in the fall when big storms come through. The waves can break for 1/2 mile.

Things I like to do that are less known are ride the steam train from Duluth to two harbor.

If you happen to be in Duluth on a Friday night I would reccomend movies in the park at Leif Erickson park.

Good suggestion. One of the campsites along that water trail is mixed in with the backpack campsites at Split Rock state park. Great spot right on the shoreline, and you can mix in a hike up the Split Rock river, one of my favorites on the "Norwegian Riviera" as the area is fondly called.

awesome! thanks guys! Have plans for the Apostle Islands next year and have been to Devil's Kettle (not hauling my kayak up there though!) The Lake Superior Water Trail sounds perfect, thanks for the link! I'll have to check out that Kettle River site too, I love camping on islands. I knew I could count on you guys... thanks again!
