Sweet! Even though the hammock changed me forever, I still find my self dropping to the ground when the terrain gets the best of me. Thanks for the blast from the past MedicineMan!
The more T.V I watch, the less I feel like my self.

    a blast from our past

but many an ultra-ultralighter is still using that technique. Thank goodness for the advances in so many areas of hammocking that have saved significant weight...to the point where we can hang at only a minimum weight penalty (and sometimes none depending on ambient F) over those ubergrounders.
Still when in REI I'll admire the tents and agreed with another poster that it would be wonderful if Shires would turn his talents (Joe at Zpacks too) to hanging.

Nah. I admit to having issues with selling my gear, but tents no longer fit into the definition of "gear" for me anymore. I sold it in short order after getting my second hammock (one with a net!).

Now then, I do have a couple of large tents in the closet. However, they aren't for sleeping in. They act as kitchens when car camping with groups. They make a great place to store the beer coolers.

When I came back from 'Nam, I couldn't handle society yet, so I headed-up deep into the New Hampshire woods to a mountain (Smarts Mountain) for about a month or so. Took a commercial 12 X 12 green tarp (from a paint store), my military Poncho and Poncho Liner, and a Hudson Bay wool blanket to sleep under/in. Made several different shelter-types, from simple lean-tos to more complex longer-term ones as I moved about hunting and fishing for food. When I finally came out/down the mountain, I bought a two-person 'backpacking' tent from Sears. Worked for a few years, but I preferred making the woods bough beds, shelters, and the blanket and tarp.

Then - HAMMOCKS! Been all I use now!
