Recently got the Butts in a Sling suspension kit -- whoopies and toggles. Their toggles are cut from aluminum arrow shafts. So I think you're good to go.

Iv been using alum aarow shafts for my past dozen hangs or so. They hold fine with no signs of denting or bending.
There is very little pressure on the shaft itself of the knot is set correctly.

Arrow shafts are fine. The whoopie goes on the knot and not on the toggle so you are good to go. You can use almost anything that wil resist being compressed. Sturdier toggles are good just in case the whoopie accidentally slips off the knot and ends up on the toggle. Don't know it I'd do it but IIRC some once used a bic pen.

I've used a Sharpie many times. No problem at all.

Careful with carbon arrow shafts though just had one break on me. They are made not to break but they compress somewhat too easily.

alot of threads on this. Dual use is a great place to start on all DIY if you are a hiker. I carry two military green matchstick holders. Perfect as toggles. One is dedicated to fire (filled with vasaline soaked cotton, and a nice flint). The other is an emergency fishing kit + xacto blade, and water purification tablets. Yeah the arrow tubes work, but do they have the cool factor?

Yep they are thin, but the cross bow shafts are much thicker, that's the ones I use.
