Texsport Wilderness Hammock

Has anyone tried the Texsport Wilderness Hammock? I was just curious to what it is like? Comfortable? Roomy? Hard to set up? Any Pics?

I haven't tried that particular brand, but I've owned hammocks nearly identical in the past. I used to use one years ago when I was a Boy Scout, and it actually turned me off of hammock camping for a while because it was uncomfortable and unreliable.

They're hideously cheap...lousy construction, lousy materials. The cheap bug netting doesn't keep out bugs. The "roof" nylon material is not waterproof and doesn't shed rain. They're heavy, but are easily damaged. They just aren't worth wasting money on, no matter the inexpensive price. I'd suggest looking elsewhere if you're considering one of these hammocks.


I also used to own a real, military issue jungle hammock, which this hammock is the "pattern" of. It was much better, quality-wise, but there are still better design options nowawdays that are more comfortable, better quality and lighter-weight.

Ya, I don't think I will be getting one but it looks neat. It looks like something that would be heavy, hard to set up and uncomfortable.

Well, the hammock itself is "heavy-duty canvas," and all those lines of suspension are paracord. The upper part has a "heavy polyurethane coating." The bug net is made of cotton. The zipper is "heavy duty."

Sounds fine for the backyard, but I'd hate to have to carry it any distance ...

I was in a bargain shop last year and they had several Texsport Hobo II hammocks for $6. Heck, I'll buy any hammock once if the price was right, if for no other reason than to look at it and learn a little about it.

For $6 it's a heck of a hammock. But I wouldn't pay $10 for it when I could get a GTUL for $17.

The why: Super long ropes thru channels that are SUPER STRETCHY. Suspension has to go. No tree huggers. No tree ropes. Short. Not very wide. Very heavy. Very stretchy. Not very "skin friendly" material (it's ok, at best). But replace the suspension and it's a fair hammock for the kids or someone short. It's not bad for napping in.

Different model than the above mentioned one, but given the brand and its reputation for bargain camping equipment (and I am not snickering... I have a few Texsport products for car camping) and my encounter with what I suppose represents a part of its philosophy regarding hammocks, I'd pass.

I had a similar hammock 30 years ago. Mine was a jungle hammock from overseas, but basically the same.
Poor design compared to todays hammocks. Heavy, packs big. Small rain fly. Tippy, due to the higher center of gravity/lack of sag. Short, if your taller than 5'-5. Odd netting design.

Will it get you off the ground and keep the skeeters and rain off, yes.
I modded mine with a spreader bar system (I was an early bloomer hammock geek). It did its job.
