Don't save money by making stuff yourself - it will waste time. Get into the woods as soon as possible.

If you come to West Virginia, I'll give you some stuff to use. (We'll test it out in the Cranberry Wilderness.) I bet others would do the same. Consider becoming a temporary itinerant beggar. You can also learn heaps at group hangs. Fall MAHHA would be a great place to meet lots of fine people, refine your skills, and get psyched for your trip. That's in October. Can you manage 4 or 5 trips of three days or more between now and then?
+1 WV (<--<< that WV he is a wise one).
And, setup (and sleep in) your hammock in your home or yard as often as possible.
As a newbie here, I attended my first Group hang last month. - In person, all of the folks there were as friendly and helpful as they are on this forum - So i can highly recommend you also attend as many group hangs as you can while prepping for your 2013 AT hike.

Welcome to HF and best good fortune on your goals.

One suggestion I would make. With a CPAP machine and the batteries to support it a Dixon roller pack or diy version of it could be of great benefit. Claims to convert 50lb pack to a 20lb load on your knees.

Good for you and carry forth!
