Continuous Ridgeline for tarp or not....

What are the pros and cons of the continuous ridgeline vs the line from each end of the tarp. I have a continuous ridgeline (30 feet) and it tangles fairly easily. I have tried a couple of thing but haven't got it down yet. I am thinking about changing. Any help will be appreciated.

I like the continuous on my bigger tarp, under it, so I can hang things up and dry clothes and such. On my son's smaller tarp, I just did the two ends, plus I didn't have to worry about any sag or pulling the smaller tarp too taut and causing damage.

My continuous is easier to adjust just by sliding my prusiks back and forth, IMHO.

Out of 6 tarps here, there is only 1 that doesn't have the continuous ridgeline, mostly just my personal preference.

I don't use a crl. I think the only two major benefits were mentioned by DivaB, adjustability and hanging stuff. I adjust my tarp with the tautline hitches which I use from the two end lines. I have not found the need to have stuff hanging above me. YMMV.

Snakeskins or tarp sleeves would help you manage your CRL as well as your tarp. I personally tie off from each end of the tarp. I have prusiks and line running to each tree so adjustment is easy. It's talked about a lot here so a search should give you a lot of opinions.

I've been much happier having ditched my individual ridge tie-outs in favor of a CRL. How is it getting tangled? I keep mine wrapped neatly and stuff in the sack with the tarp when I stow it.

Just playing around I've found how I "load" my tarp and CRL in the stuff sack has a bit to do with how easy it deploys. I have an S-biner on one end, it's the last end in, first end out. I've also found a line that I really like for a CRL. It's from NiteIze; it's their green reflective cord, 50ft. Prusicks work well with it. I tighten it first using a 9-biner from NiteIze. Love the set up. Still need a chance to test it in bad weather but it doesn't tangle as long as I'm careful how I put the loose end in the stuff sack.

The only other advantage I can think of for a CRL is that it could help if a limb fell down...okay, I know I'm stretching it there... and having the extra cord isn't bad considering it weighs next to nothing.

I don't think it's a big deal either way; more of a presonal preference.

Hey Cut Up, the CRL allows one to hang ridge line under the tarp for more support, and as DivaB said, allows for a nice clothesline. It can also be used above the tarp if one is worried about rain water following the suspension down. A CRL doesn't tug on the tarp ends the way a 2-line system does. The downside to a CRL would a a bit more weight and longer line to deal with. I leave my CRL attached to the tarp all the time and do a figure-8 wrap around my fingers with the ends prior to packing it up. Haven't really had any tangle issues.

I do like Smokebait. wrap the excess line in a figure 8 between pinky and thumb, across your palm, take it off your palm and and then the last several inches around all that. Next time you go to deploy it, start your deploy by pulling the line from the center of the wad of line.

Try it, see how smoothly it all comes apart.
