What kind of thread to use?

I am just curious what kind of thread people most often use when constructing their own hammocks? I was planing on using thread to make sails with as it is strong and resistant to the environment. Are there better choices?

    Thanks

    Brent

I just use some whatever's laying around and 100% polyester type thread. Guterman's (sp?) Is well spoken of as a brand. Nylon thread is somewhat stretchy for my machine but I use it for hand stitching. Just stay away from the cotton

Yep. 100% polyester. Gutermans is good stuff.

Little to no shrinkage, wears well, etc

Gütermann - to be exact, and a +1 for this brand - pretty hard to break, great strength, etc

Polyester thread that is smaller than your needle size (I tend to use denim needles for just about everything but working with really light sil or breathable nylon--think 1.1 oz or so--so that's less of an issue than it would be with tiny needles).

Guttermann's is good, but be wary of using their "upholstery" line with small-sized needles (low numbers on the package); I've had issues with the thread not wanting to feed through the needle when using size 70 or smaller needles before.

Steer clear of cotton thread, as has been mentioned.

Nylon thread can be used as well, but it tends to be slicker, thicker, and not work as well with home machines. I'd avoid it unless I had an industrial machine (which I don't).

Sail thread may be too heavy for home use machines. In reality any high quality 100% polyester thread is fine. Normal weight thread is all I use. The thread itself is _not_ actually what provides the strength. The fabric weave does that.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Sounds as if you've gotten some great advice on thread. I also use the Gutermann 100% polyester.

I'll just add this: don't forget your needles. Proper needles go hand-in-hand with proper thread. And do not use old needles. Use a new, sharp needle for each project, and maybe more than one for big projects. You'll be glad you did.

    Enjoy!
