Thanks all for the comments! I'm very pleased with how it turned out and I learned a lot.

First observation is 12 channels is almost too many. As I was manually stuffing, I could only just fit my hand/fistfull of down into the 4x5x2.5" channels. And it's a lot of baffles to sew in. I'm making a 1/2 length next time. I think I'll try 8 channels on it.

Second thing is I think grosgrain is overkill for the cinch channel. Next one I'll make a strip of ripstop for the channel. It will be lighter but more importantly it will bunch up more easily when cinched. The grosgrain works fine and will soften up, but it's overkill as that channel is not really structural.

Third, I'm not sure yet about using full length channels on a full length underquilt. It offers me a little fiddle factor, but it also allows the UQ to bunch a little toward the center. Partly that's because it's bloody heavy. I think on a full length, corner ties would be fine and would be easier to sew on. It's a little apples and oranges though. Another thing about the channels. I don't know why it didn't occur to me to sew the side channels on before stuffing. That would be simpler. I think I was excited to stuff it.

    More later.

I hear ya on that, my 14 channels were a bit difficult to stuff as well. My solution was to get the 1oz. down clump in by hand and then stuff it down the channel with a Pool Noodle. Hey, it worked!

Thanks for all the commentary as you think back through the process. A shorty under quilt sounds like a great next project. Maybe, Milo will trade you for his big one...

    You will never use it!!

I hope you tried it out when you test hung it because that dog has the look of "Wahoo look what daddy made for me" in his eye, and that as they say is that. Maybe he will let you use it some time till you can make one for yourself, one that is not as nice of course.
Whether trail or paddle don't you know
My hammock is the way to go
There peace and solitude I find
To ease all troubles from my mind
Both body and soul revel in delight
As day surrenders to inky night

BTW, here's a brief breakdown as to estimated cost. I think all materials came from diygearsupply.com except maybe the grosgrain and the S biners.

    Approximately:

2.2yds each of Olive Green and Gray 1.1 calendared seconds - $15
    1.5 yd of no-seeum - $5
    21' of 1/8" shock cord and 8' of 3/32" - $7
    20' of 2" grosgrain - $2
    6 cord locks - $1.50
    2 'S' biners - $3
    2 $9 pillows - $18

For a grand total guesstimation before shipping and tax of about $51.50, so maybe $60 or so.

Also, I'm embarrassed to admit I got a little carried away with the overfill. With stuff sack it weighs in at 50 oz... Definitely not UL!

But it's for car and motorcycle camping so I don't care.

    And IT'S SO FLUFFY!!!

He would like nothing better than if I covered him up with that thing. Never knew a dog who liked to get under the covers more than he does.

what fabric did you use for the front/back/baffles?

Could you link us to your sources?

[Edit: sorry I didn't see the breakdown post!]
