    Hammocking Backpacker from PA

Hi, I'm Brad (31/m) and have been going to the woods ever since I was months old to my family mountain in the Endless Mountains. As a kid growing up I spent my time after school in the woods and being a boy scout. I had extensive wilderness training as part of my college outing club leadership objectives and have taken a fond hobby of self-reliant solo backpacking adventures. I've survived all of them and have switched to a hammock setup from a small tent after college.

My primary backpacking hammock is the Byer Moskito Traveller Hammock with a ProFly or Walmart 5x7 Tarp depending on the situation. I tend to use a ridgeline for the tarp and hang gear and stuff from there. I typically just tie my shoes to a loop hanging from the ridgeline and hang my bag to a tree under the tarp. I am partial to paracord (various grades) for suspension (and countless other uses) and use various knots (some quick release) depending on the situation.

I have tried the Eno DoubleNest but was unable to get a flat lay on my Indoor hammock stand (The Byer Sumo Stand) or any two trees I found at various distances, so have returned it. I will give Eno DN another try (I have read about length inconsistencies and the one I tried was certainly too short (8 inches under the manufacturer specs) for my tastes even though I'm a short guy (5'5")).

As a professional Quality Assurance Engineer (in software industry), I have no trouble coming up with hammock tests and look to expand and formalize some tests around this (taking length/weight of person in consideration to exiting formulas). I try hanging it in various positions for tree and tarp considerations and ensure a flat lay before I finalize my purchase. For some reason I really like the Byer hammocks the most so far and are reasonably priced. I like the fact I can replace it without a sweat if something happens to it and haven't found a real benefit of spending more than $50 for a hammock other than the purpose of supporting a brand.

    My Hammocks:
    1) Byer Moskito Traveller (Indoor/outdoor - both sides, just get a great lay in this one and use old ones with no netting indoors)
    2) Byer TravellerLite (campground/indoor lounger)
    3) Byer Aruba (Indoor lounger/nap hammock - drop too narrow for long term sleeping)

I may have to build my own hammock as I can't seem to find the perfect hammock yet. I like the Eno material for its stretchyness compared to Byer, but the sizing on the Eno's are just terrible for my body size and those annoying flaps really make me question the design quality and engineers at Eno. Suggestions appreciated...

    Welcome to the fun ....
we have many hangers in PA ... we get together to hang on the AT when the cool weather comes so keep an eye out
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

    Welcome to the addiction!

We all have our favorite hammocks. While I am personally not a fan of the Byer line, I have a personal connection to them. The Moskito was my first hammock and the company (Byer of Maine) was started by my great-grandfather's brother.

Testing hammocks and other gear is a great excuse to get out to the woods.

Welcome aloft from a former Pennsylvanian, now South Carolinian.
I also am not a fan of the Bye of Maine hammocks, but everyone is different. It is our differences that make us unique. HYOH

Welcome to HF from NC! Hope you will share your skills and equipment reviews with the others on this forum.
Paracord has its uses, but I'm guessing you'll consider reviewing amsteel, dynaglide, spectra, etc. sometime soon?
