Hey,
I've had hammock ambitions for many years. A meditation teacher once wrote me from Bali, including a picture of his working on his "hammock meditation." I'm not a person who relaxes easily and I believe the hammock has become, for me, the avatar of relaxation. To the left is me, lounging in Costa Rica a couple of years ago.
I've slept out in a hammock once or twice. The most memorable occasion being when we were car camping with friends who realized that they had left the keys for their Thule storage box at home--meaning that all their gear was inaccessible. We invited them into our pop-up camper for the night but it got so crowded that I headed outside. That night I learned how cold a hammock gets at night.
I don't remember how it happened, but I recently learned that hammock camping is a "thing," that is, something that people are into. I started doing some research and, next thing I knew, I had stumbled across Shug's videos on YouTube. I'm a big fan of Shug's, a person whose joy shines through his also very informative videos.
Anyway, I've been thinking about switching from a tent to a hammock for some time. I go camping with my son's Scout Troop every month and I have lots of opportunities to sleep out in a hammock. I'm also hoping to lighten my pack load and I think switching to a hammock will help there. This morning, I bought an ENO Double Nest on sale for $45. I plan to add tree straps, dutch clips, whoopie slings and such after it arrives.
Apart from that, I'll mention that I live in the Pacific Northwest USA, where I've been for a bit more than 20 years. I grew up hiking and backpacking in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona. I'm married and have two kids. My other interests include volleyball, physical fitness and the study of Spanish. I look forward to becoming part of the hammock forums community.
