What do you do with shoes and other bulky items when it rains?

I have made a pack cover/gear hammock for my stuff that I haven't even had time to try to see if I like it as a gear hammock or not. Seems like a great idea, though. It was very easy to make. I used the plans from just jeff's site. The jack's sell them pretty inexpensively too.

Wrap it up in a piece of mylar and hang it from a tree if there aren't any logs or rocks.

It's a good question for me to ponder since I'm full time in a hammocksock now with no tarp above. I've decided to put the boots in a cuben sack and suspend from the whoopie when that time comes.

+1 on a gear hammock.

+1 on hanging your backpack, shoes, etc. on the hammock suspension (on one end of the hammock).

+1 on hammock pockets.

You could always rig your backpack to be a gear hammock, and turn it into a multi-use item.

Place a piece of Tyvek to make a floor mat for your shoes. Or, make/reuse a Tyvek sleeve/pouch to place your shoes in.

I usually set mine on the ground, but when raining or if the ground is damp, I hang them up. Sticking your feet in shoes that have slugs in them is not pretty and neither is my language when that happens.

The one thing that I won't hang without is my 16oz folding aluminum stool. Besides it's obvious use for sitting around the fire and something to sit on while doing foot maintainance before turning in, everything gets stacked on top of the stool behind the hammock under the tarp. Out of any water or small critters, now marmots or skunks could still be a problem just haven't ran into them yet.

I usually put everything in a trash bag underneath the hammock - depending on how wet things are I may or may not tie it shut. Smelly wet socks get binder clipped at the FOOT end of the hammock!

I have a piece of closed cell foam in a tyvek envelope (sit pad) that I use as a mat to stand on while I take my shoes off. I hang everything from the suspension, pack on one side and clip my shoes together and hang them on the other side. After I get in the hammock I pick up the mat and bring it in. In the morning the mat is handy to stand on and retrieve my shoes. When the tyvek gets grimey, I replace it with a new envelope.
