I came up with a neat idea for a one tree setup. Take a pole and lash it into the fork on a branch at the desired distance. Sink the pole 6" or so into the ground to keep it from slipping and hang your hammock. The pictures here show the setup in my yard. It's a long-term setup, so I used extra rope to pad the fork of the tree to prevent damage.
Out in the woods, look for a storm-downed sapling or long branch. It wouldn't need to be the straightest, just long enough. I guess you would want to make sure whatever you find was strong enough. You could skip the padding and perhaps even the lashing. The lashing really is only to keep the pole from falling backwards away from the tree, since the forrk will hold it from pulling toward the tree.
