    Tarps on the Beach

I'm headed for the beach vacation in a few weeks. It's a rather remote area where we drive out water's edge, I was thinking I might throw up my Mac Cat in porch mode for my wife as she really can't tolerate a great deal of direct sun.

Here's my thought, to find something I can attach my guylines to that I can burry in the sand as an anchor. I was thinking of something like a round plastic lid of some sort.

My wife is looking at beach shelters that are on late season sale but they seem a bit small for the money. I'll be experimenting in the the yard with some salvaged tent poles but the sand dynamics are something I can't really test for. If anyone has any sand experience they could share. Also is it necessary to put a base under tent poles?

Soft, flowing sand might require an anchor that has more surface area than a simple dirt stake. Most times, there is firm sand just below the soft stuff on the surface.
I would think that maybe some homemade aluminum angle stock that is cut about a foot long would be sufficient for most of these applications unless the wind is really rocking. 1 1/2 inch aluminum angle stock is relatively inexpensive, easy to cut and shape, and lightweight.
    Something like this--

    Watch out for wind

I dont know where this beach is, but having spent alot of time on beaches (both ocean and great lakes), and the wind can be a real factor, especially coming off the water. Ive seen it completely uproot beach umbrellas that were anchored with sand screws. A large tarp can turn into a sail and blow away.

Well noted! Seems like more research is in order and careful attention to method of pitching. My thought has been to present an down sloped porch toward the sea and keep open the backside away from the sea as not to catch too much air. I figure a smaller tarp like the Mac Cat standard pitched not too tall and flat is a good place to start.

I am going to do the same thing.
I have a fall fishing trip on a remote unihabitted island.
We will not camp on the island, but I want a day camp area.

My idea is to use a sand spike used to hold your rod when surf fishing.
Then I will put a mop handle in the sand spike.
Then set up an open tarp pyramid.
You may want to add a line from the back corner of the pyramid to the top of the mop handle attache with a clove hitch then down to the beach.
You need a spike for the above line.
You need three more spikes for the corners.

The low pyramid may be better in wind.

You can also add adjustability by cutting your wooden pole in half and reconnecting it with a pvc sleeve and nut and bolt. That way you can have a tall pole, a medium pole and a short pole.

Hope this makes sense. I set up a quick one and will do it again before my fishing trip. I wll try to post pics next time

Cheap PVC sand spike you can even make it yourself.
These do not always go into the sand easily.

Common sand spike. I bet you can find it easily at any beach town. There are nice expensive ones with long rebar and a foot stand for help pushing into the sand. I am not explaining it well its the best but of course more expensive

I use these Snow/Sand stakes from REI on river trips when pitching tents or tarps in soft sand. They work pretty well. REI also sells snow/sand anchors, which are like little parachutes that you fill with sand and bury.

A while back Muttly turned me on to these and with a little ingenuity I bet you can make them easily.

Actually made them for a snow hang using a cut up Walmart blue tarp and paracord. They worked great. Easy to do.

I have used sacks as anchors.
Go to the post office and pick up a couple of the Tyvek envelopes, fill with sand and tie off to them. TheY are reusable, tough, and free. I even use them as stuff sacks in my pack.
