Am I correct that the cross bar serves merely to prevent the tops of the stands from being pulled toward each other by the weight of the load in the hammock...that is it acts as a spreader bar...and doesn't support any downward forces?

Correct...the same as in the turtlelady bamboo stand and the turtledog stand (when suspended correctly).

You are correct. I have since revised my design rather significantly and will be putting up pics soon. Basically I went to school on the turtlelady and turtledog stands to attach my hammock as close as possible to the same point on the top rail as the tripod is attached to minimize deflection of the top rail. Plus some other goodies.

After my trip to the beach in Sept where the Witch went for beta testing and redesign, I've made (4) mods. I'm still in development but getting closer.

1. Exchanged top rail clamp for a loose coupling.
2. Hammock suspension now passes through tripod head connecting to top rail.
3. Simple mechanism to fix legs into the tripod head.
4. Replaced wooden top rail union with aluminum tubing.

A couple of interesting little pieces of hardware that I used are; cam adjustable bicycle seatpost clamps that I used as limiters on the top rail the other are the 3" plumbing test plugs that fix the legs into the tripod.

No tools are required to assemble the stand. I made some mini suspensions for the stand from amsteel, simple locked brummel loops on each end, the hammock is held simply by a larkshead. Though the hammock's own line or strap suspension could be used just as easily.

Here you see the top rail in a 2 piece 9' 7" configuration for indoor use. I also have a 3 piece 12 foot configuration to use outdoors with my tarp. The 3 piece tends to flex a bit more. Pictured is a stock Blackbird.


Basic dimmensions:

1. Top rail is 54" off the ground.
2. The span center of tripod to center of tripod is variable (pictured 9' 1".)
3. The legs are splayed about 30" apart at the base.

I'm still not thrilled about the loose coupling for the top rail, my goal would be something less complicated. I'd like to simplify the entire design so it can be accomplished with just a table saw and drill.
