I have made a lot of splices using the Sampson indexes and the other day ran across an old post regarding the length of the taper. On all of the info regarding continuous loops and whoopie slings there is no mention of the long tapers listed in the table. Even Sampsons instruction does not mention the long tapers. I can remember somewhere a suggestion that a taper be a short fid length but nothing like what is listed. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Example 1/8" amsteel: The table calls for a bury of 5.25' which is 2 fids and then call for a taper of 2.63", which is 1 fid. I haven't seen and info regarding 3 fid length bury???? The constriction portion of the bury on a whoopie sling is only advised to be 3 1/2 fids?

Can someone explain?
