Moutain Serape for Top Quilt?

Anyone used one of these?

Basically it functions as a half zip sleeping bag that has a half zip, 2.4 oz primaloft, and I like that it can be worn as a poncho or great coat as well... Probably heavy for gram weenies but could work 3 season with an UQ?

Would primaloft loose it's insulation when compressed between self and hammock?

All the down top quilts that I make have a neck hole and a footbox that will open flat, so that I have a serape AND a quilt - multipurpose = lightweight.

Looks like a poncho liner. Price is steep for what it is. But to answer your question, yes, that can work as a tq. Or it can work as a uq with some tie-out modifications and a suspension system.

I see the weight savings for sure, and definately more compressable, though I do like the hood and the ruggedness of the fabric a bit more on the Mountain Serape... good to know there are options.

What was unprofessional about the other version though? Clearly their very near in concept, just tailored a bit to a different crowd but that sounds a bit like you're taking a jab at that manufacturer?

No, no! I was comparing Jack's "professional" version of a down serape with MY version.

JRB also has a two ounce down hood that attaches inside the neck open of its quilts or to any stand outdoor gear collar.

It's basically a woobie with a few mods for $185. Some careful shopping will get you a quality down TQ for the same or just a few bucks more. But then that's the Clan Scott side showing...

The hood and drawcord are nice features; my poncho liner top quilt is missing those (added an head hole with OmniTape closure last year). It'll work just fine for three-season top quilt use (down to about 40 for most folks) and be durable enough to lend out if you want.

It's heavy compared to some of the other options out there, as mentioned, and a little expensive for the temperature rating--but you're paying for convenience. You don't have to add the head hole, hood, and waist cinch system yourself, and it comes in MultiCam, which is going to drive the price up as well.

So, all in all, a little overpriced compared to other options in the same temperature range and weight, but it could be worth it for the convenience and features if those are what you want.

Great input from all... hot **** I love this forum. Yeah, it seemed a bit high even with the Ranger Green version coming in at 170... They used to offer them at 135 but they were made overseas, so at least these are US made.

I'm also a hunter so I like the idea of a camoflage pattern to sit and glass for animals in, but the weight is double what I found some of the other cottage vendors making...

Heres another question... being a newbie and not an insulation or fabric guru, how would one determine what the temp range of something like this be? They only stated that it was 2.4oz primaloft... is there a magic bullet for determining temperature ratings?
