Woke up in my hammock at a primitive campsite outside of Boone NC this past spring with something sniffing at my feet. I thought it was my dog being annoying, turns out she was still dead asleep 20 feet away, and it was a young black bear under my tarp with me.

Didnt need any coffee to wake up, that morning.
It could be that the purpose of my life is merely to serve as a warning to others.

Several years ago, my wife and I hiked to Gregory's Bald in the GSMNP. We had packed a lunch and on finishing we lay on the blanket and took a nap.

I was awoken by a doe nuzzling and licking on on ear. I tried to reach a fig newton, in spite of park regulations, to feed her.

But to no avail, she spooked.

Fun time as the deer are very accustomed to human presence.

Here is my story. I saw this thread last week and thought it was a welcome thread. But then a week later I saw it was up to 7 pages and I says I gotta see what this guy or girls story is. I was thinkin that Run ins with wildlife was a really long forum name!
I like refried beans. That's why I wanna try fried beans, because maybe they're just as good and we're just wasting time. You don't have to fry them again after all.

WHAT THE CRAP IS THAT???? My gut tells me its something from a movie... either way I'm having nightmares tonight!

I haven't had many run ins with wildlife actually, but the ones I have had have been memorable. When I was like 16 I was out on the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton and got within 10 ft of a bull moose that looked to be the size of a Kenworth! Thing just looked at me then kept eating out of the tree.

Another time we were in Algonquin, I believe on Little Joe Lake, and saw a moose while canoeing, a nice cow, which was followed by a bull swimming across the lake! One of the guys got it on video. Ignore the genius going "moose! look over here moose!" lol.

While camping alone and on the far side of the lake from the rest of the campsites, I had an owl land on my tarp near my head.
Various raccoons and vultures wandering through camp.
Armadillo wandering under my hammock and bumped my butt.
Pack of javalinas (collared peccary) wander through camp in the middle of the night. That was the closest I've ever been to being actually scared in camp. Felt like a low hanging fruit.

Back in the early 70's the funnest encounter I can remember is when my climbing buddies Jim H., Greg C. and I were sleeping on the ground in an over hang cave on the south face of Table Rock. We were awaken to the sound of Greg fighting a large woods rat for a bag of cookies after it had walked across his head to get them! Not sure Greg ever saw the humor in the situation but Jim and me enjoyed it!

A couple of years ago we took the Scouts camping near Bushkill Falls Pa. While unpacking my car I had a Doe walk up and pose for pictures. She probably was being fed by park visitors and had very little fear of humans.

I know the low hanging fruit feeling.

My butt was at perfect nibble hight for the alligator that came ashore next to me while I was in my hammock...
