huge tarp doesn't make for small package.

I'm a car camper with aspirations of being a backpacker. The biggest thing keeping me tethered to the car is how to pack everything appropriately. The hammock and insulation isn't such a big deal. One issue is packing my tarp. I love my Kelty Noah's 12. It's versatile and provides lots of coverage. Once I start getting the hang of toting this stuff into the woods on my back, I may decide to go with something smaller. But for now, its great.

Currently, I'm packing it back in the sack it came with. The ridgeline and guylines are still attached and I've folded it in halves lots of times to get it down to the size I need to get it in the sack. When it was new, the sack was too big, but now it fills it completely.

Have any of you tried different sized compression sacks or folded/rolled/wadded it up differently? Just looking for a bit of guidance. Thanks!

Search for snake skins. I dont have any, but I plana to make some for same sized tarp. You can also search fro Bishop Bag for a similar idea.

I thought about skins for this, but it's the finished size I was wondering about. In theory, it sounds great, but how do you pack those in your pack in a space saving manner? I'll check the bishop bag idea too. Thanks for the thoughts!

the Kelty Noah is a 68D polyester - it is far from compact. I am one of those people who loves a big honkin' tarp, so the one I usually carry with me for backpacking is a 12x10 - almost as big as the Noah, but made from Silnylon, so it's significantly lighter and more compact than the Noah.

That said, my typical tap-packing approach is "stuff it into the sack". No folding, just jam it in there. I do use snakeskins sometimes, and then I stuff it into the pack instead. Even with the snakeskins, it's just bunched up randomly, not carefully folded or rolled. I find that going random help it to sort of fill the available space of wherever you jam it, which helps to stabilize your pack. Also, with the snakeskins, if the tarp is wet when I take it down, I strap it to the outside of my pack to give it somewhat of a chance to at least partially dry, and keep from getting my other gear wet.

Sleeping bags, quilts, hammocks, tarps, it all gets stuffed in. no rhyme or reason, just stuff it in.
Like MustardMan said, it's not the size of the tarp, but the material it's made from. The SilNylon is great stuff, and it still surprises me how light and compact, yet durable the material is.

I don't know what kind of pack you have, but I like snakeskins for the tarp and I attach them to the back of my pack when hiking, not inside. This allows me to deploy the tarp in a rainstorm without opening the pack.

There are two reasons I like snakeskins.
One is that I can setup the tarp and leave it in the skins and enjoy breezes and a view of the sky (but it can quickly be staked for a sudden shower).
The other reason is that it is 1,000 times easier to set up a tarp in a howling wind if it is in snakeskins.

Now to the issues of weight and bulk. Take out a 2nd mortgage and buy a cuben tarp

he could make a silnylon one and not take out a 2nd mortgage although it might be a bit heavier.

I second mad777 on the snake skins outside the pack. I prefer anaconda skins (one long tube instead of two short ones)

It squished the air out easier.
You can stake as you go.
