    Just got a sewing machine!

Well my mom had a spare laying around,so now it's sitting in my spare room. It's. A Pfaff Hobby 1016, and I realized I don't know anything about sewing machines.

It has a needle, I ordered some gutterman tera and mara threads from diygearsupply, and now I'm waiting for a free weekend to do some experimenting. In the meantime I was wondering if you all knew of any "gotchas" about this particular model or brand... I couldn't find much of anything here or on Google.

Maybe your mom could give you a brief lesson?

    Sewing through your finger hurts.

    Just and FYI.

She's never used this one actually (it was a hand-me-down from a friend), and she lives in a different city. I'm fine with learning on my own, just wondering if there are any quirks of this line/model that I'd want to be careful of. Maybe this would be better asked in a sewing forum

Each machine has its own special "quirks". Like Granny said, have Mom give you some pointers on threading, winding bobbins, etc.

You can pick up some pointers via Youtube's sewing videos. Sometimes the info applies, sometimes not. Practice on some scrap fabrics or old clothes for practice.

Congrats on the machine! I started with a cheap one from Walmart and zero knowledge plus no one to teach me. It's been nothing but fun ever since.

RamblinRev has some great videos on sewing gear!

Try contacting the company. They may have or may be able to point you to a manual. You may have to pay for it.

Go to oldpfaffphorum group on yahoo. If the machine has not been used for a long while, the oil that was supposed to lubricate has likely turned to sticky or hard varnish. You might use 90% alcohol liberally everywhere something is supposed turn in a bearing or slide on or within something else to loosen the old oil. Let it soak in, and then add some more. Once you know everything is free, clean up the mess with rags and cotton swabs, and then apply standard white sewing machine oil to all oiling points and every visible bearing.

Sometimes on old machines it can take days or weeks for everything to free up. You may have switches for stitches on the Hobbymatic that you don't want to break. Don't force them. In time, the alcohol or other recommended solvent -- if something else is recommended for nylon / delrin / plastic parts --will break the varnish. Don't force and break a part that will eventually be freed.

Thanks for the advice, folks. Luckily there is already a manual; I'll look into the lubricant situation too.

They have some manuals here: http://www.cozmocrafts.com/search.html?q=pfaff+1016

Whoops, thought you were looking for a manual. Nevermind.
