    Heavy Hammocker-DIY Speer

    Hello!
    first post...
i have been researching a Speer hammock, i have read "hammock camping" cover to cover and am ready to take the plunge...some questions for the gurus:

i am 6' 2" and weigh 300 lbs, should i use 2-ply supplex (2.5 oz/yd), 3-ply supplex (3.5 oz/yd) or 160D cordura (4.5 oz/yd)? in the book, it says i can use a range from supplex (2.5 oz/yd) to 160D cordura (4.5 oz/yd) any experience out there? obviously i would like to keep the weight down...i will use the 1.5" webbing...
all of the above data is from the rain shed...

    Thanks!

Welcome to HF. I would say since you need the extra strength anyhow you should look into making a double layer hammock. That way you can put a pad in between if you want. 2 layers of 1.9 should hold just fine. There is also mer availability of ripstop and more selection of color. If you still want to use something like supplex you could put 1.1 under it. 1.1 ripstop has held me for short periods and I am all but 200#. Note; I was very careful not to bounce around.

My double layer 1.9 feels sturdy as a tank. Fear not the ground in a 2x 1.9!
My knife is so sharp it cut the sixth finger off my right hand! On the plus side, Inigo Montoya no longer hunts me.
