    do i NEED a ridgeline?

noob here... i have a GT Ultralight and an ENO ProFly tarp. i have never slept overnight in my hammock but i have logged time just lounging in it. as it is, i currently just run a line from the center guy-line attachments to my tree straps and call it good. should i be using a ridgeline? is there an advantage to a ridgline and, if so, what is it? also, wouldnt a ridgeline eventually compromise the waterproof coating on the underside my ProFly?

    thanks!

(NOTE: i have more than enough Amsteel to make a ridgeline. i know that may be a little overkill, but i love the stuff and its all i use)

Nah, you don't need a full ridgeline on your tarp. Some folks just like having one.

Nope, it just helps in getting the sag the same with differing anchor points. It also helps to keep a bug net up, a place to attach a ridge-line organizer and a place to hang quilts and clothing to dry.

    "Need" one? probably not.
"Want" one? You won't know until you try.
If you make it with Amsteel, you've got yourself a hand hold that makes getting up and out easier.
As for draping your ProFly (I have one of those too.) over it, as long as you snug it down so it can't move much, you should be ok.
If it's stupid but works, it isn't stupid.

Ants on their way from one tree to the next may cross your face without the ridge line to provide a more direct and aerial path. If, on the way across your hammock they find crumbs, they will return to recruit more ants. Which will lead to more ants eventually crossing your face.

Don't think of it as a ridge-line, think of it as an extra piece of lightweight and emergency cordage put to better use than remaining in your pack.
