Too bad there's no overnite parking at the Yearling TH, that would be easier. Or if you want to come from the north at CR 316 and then back to Pat's Island on Sunday.

Unlikely I could get started much before noon, so it would be a late arrival at Hidden Pond or a nite on the trail 5-6 miles short and arrive at HP early Sat am.

One other thing to consider is archery season will be open outside of the Juniper Springs Rec. Area.

I'd be willing to do a shuttle. If we were to do an overnighter from SR 19, avoiding the hunters would definitely be a plus.

There's a decent spot at Whiskey Creek in the Juniper Prairie Wilderness, but that's only two miles short of Hidden Pond. There're another couple of sites among the pine stands further into the Juniper Wilderness that don't have any water, but again, they're even closer to Hidden Pond.

Even starting at noon and averaging 2.5 MPH (which is fairly conservative for me at the beginning of the day, but is about average at the end of the day for me; I tend to slow down as the miles add up), we'd be able to cover that in about eight hours--call it ten with breaks to be on the safe side. Which means that we'd be night hiking for about three hours (~7.5 miles, or about from the SR 40 crossing) or so if we pushed into Hidden Pond.

I'm familiar enough with the trail that I'd be willing to night hike through there with a companion--not sure I'd want to do it solo, just in case I step in an hole or something. It'll be a new moon, so headlamps are going to be a must.

The pond is really nice and cool if you're willing to head for the far end. The bottom is "muck" so having some kind of little float would be nice.

The Pat's Island trailhead was pretty far off the beaten path. I don't believe anyone had any issues leaving their vehicles unattended. The trail doesn't have a lot of shade so you'll want to avoid the heat of mid-day.
Well, I hope to see you there, zukiguy. You're a great guy to hang and hike with!

Another option that I've been toying with for the lake is a pair of water/camp shoes. I've been eyeing a couple of offerings at WallyWorld--since they're not going to take much trail abuse, I figure they'd be just about perfect for this...

The Pat's Island trail head is pretty isolated, and I felt that my car would be safe there. Now, I wouldn't leave cash in plain view or anything, but I figure it's probably about as safe as it is at the parking lot at work.

OK, so we'll go from SR 19 to Hidden Pond. What time could you get there? I may be able to arrange my travels and get there a little earlier.

    Anybody else??

I could do noonish, for sure. Anything before 8 AM is probably a no-go for me. I have trouble getting up before 6 AM at home, and it's going to take at least an hour and an half to drive down to Ocala.

Since we're going to be doing a shuttle on Sunday, do you want to meet at US-19 or at Pat's Island (I'd prefer to park there if I'm not coming in from further north; it's an easy walk-out from Hidden Pond and one that I'm familiar with) on Friday?

We can meet at Pat's Island TH on Friday. I'll confirm a time when we get closer, but no earlier than 10am as I'll have some business to wrap up, then 1 to 1-1/2 hr drive.

Good deal! I look forward to hearing from you on the details!

Does anyone have any specific activities they'd like to pursue while we're out there (aside from, y'know, the hiking and camping parts)? Day hikes to the springs? Trail runs? Gear show-offs? Whatever comes to mind; don't be shy...

where did this end up being located? I read back a few pages and couldn't see it.

If the weather cools, I'm in. I need a hang.

Hidden Pond, in Ocala National Forest. The lake there is a godsend on hot days.
