Not sure but a rule of thumb for these is to just multiply pie times the diameter to get the fabric length. Give yourself an inch for error and to allow for the opening to be slightly larger than the base. I made a bunch of these few weeks ago with some left over material.

    Circumference question??

Here's a quick video using some scrap pieces and sloppy sewing to show the concept.

Here are some illustrations of what I'm talking about.
How do you come up with 17 as the Circumference? I would think it was 15.7"

    Am I missing something?

Did you add in some for seam allowances? Video isn't working here either.. I'm going to make one.

Video is 'Unavailable' for me as well.

I'm interested in how to do the side seam when you sew the bottom of the sac in first.
Also, how does the drawstring tube work out?
It looks like there would be raw fabric edges at the ends of the drawstring tube?
I've always done the side seam first (flat felling, usually), so I can't figure out how to use the 'bottom first' idea.

Anyway, lots of ways to do these things.....

I found out through trial and error that you start sewing the circle at the seam allowance and not the edge. Sew around the circle and you end up more or less at the other seam allowance. Sew the side seam still inside out. Stop at the seam line for the draw cord. You can make the draw cord channel however you like, it has no affect on sewing the bottom.

Very nice. I subscribed so I can find this later. I did a square bottomed sack today, and an envelope-like ditty bag but I want to do a cylindrical sack later. Thanks!

I'll see if I can dig up the video and repost it to youtube.

Sorry folks. I don't know what happend to the video. But this is very easy to do. Just take some scrap material and put it in the machine as I show in the illustration. Don't worry about getting the dimension correct, just learn the concept. Sew down the line of the rectangle while pulling the circle piece around so it stays under the foot. Once you sew about an inch you'll say "ah I get it now".
