Permethrin spray I picked it up at Bass Pro Shop - an outdoors store. I don't know the stores y'all have up there, but any good outdoors store should have it. Or you can order it online and have it delivered.

Walmart has it in the camping section. Sawyer brand in yellow packaging. $9.88 for a big bottle of it.

Both WalMart and my local Army-Navy Surplus store carry Permethrin. Picaridin is carried sometimes in the WalMart camping section in small bottles (I get about three uses out of them, twice that if I'm just doing my legs or upper body) and in Sports Authority in larger bottles.

Personally, I prefer the Picaridin (20% concentration); it lasts almost as long as the DEET and works better on ticks while not losing any effectiveness against skeeters that I've noticed. Also, it doesn't melt nylon the way that stronger (98% and up) concentrations of DEET can--seeing as how most hammocks are made out of nylon, well...

Anyway, that's my personal experience down here in Florida, where we have biting arthropods from February to November (and sometimes in December and January, too).
+1 Picaridin preference. Seems to work great for me, is totally pleasant for me compared to DEET, and I don't hesitate to spray it on my clothing if I have not treated with Permethrin. One caveat: most of my experience with wonderful 15-20% Pic has been in combo with Perm treated clothing and or hammock. For a couple of years + this has proven 100% effective for my roaming deep woods off trail and even next to swamps in MS, where there is a bug or two. But I have used just the Pic on my skin a few times, and it has worked quite well by itself also. I did get 1 mossy bite once working in the yard, I guess I missed a spot.

They eat me alive NO MATTER WHAT! Unfortunately my backpacking season is defined by the mosquitoes, but that's OK. Lot's of other things I'd rather be doing in the heat of summer (way to sweaty)

I've had a ton of luck with this stuff. It's like applying a glue stick that's not sticky, or oily.

This stuff works really well too. Repel Permanone It has just enough to coat two day hammocks - or, as it said, one full set of clothes. Read the directions and be real careful when applying. This stuff is a neurotoxin and is really dangerous to cats when wet. However, it is freaking GLORIOUS to be out in bug country and they won't come anywhere near you.
