My kids did the same thing, but the more I pushed the stranger it all seemed to them. Since I stopped bothering about it, they have started to come back to hammocks and really enjoy them. They're smart kids, they will figure it all out as they come to their own conclusions.

Who cares about showers, gourmet food, using flush toilets. Just keep on walking and being away from it all.

That is one of my favorite scenes in the movie, when Everett steals Washington Bartholomew Hogwallop's watch:

Everett: The old tactician has got a plan. For the transportation that is. I don't know how I'm gonna keep my coiffure in order.
Pete: How's this a plan? How we gonna get a car?
Everett: [producing a pocket watch] Sell that. I figure it can only have painful association for Wash.
Pete: [reading] "To Washington Bartholomew Hogwallop, from his loving Cora. Amor Fidel... is."
Everett: It was in his bureau. I figure it'll fetch us enough cash for a good used auto-voiture, and a little left over besides.
Pete: You miserable little snake! You stole from my kin!
Everett: Who was fixin' to betray us.
Pete: You didn't know that at the time.
Everett: So I borrowed it until I did know!
Pete: That don't make no sense!
Everett: Pete, it's a fool that looks for logic in the chambers of the human heart.

I have nonsensical conversations like that with my wife all the time. When we got engaged, she says to me, "I want to get married in the Catholic church and have a full mass, but the only way that can happen is for you to convert to Catholicism."

"Well, honey, I'm an agnostic - a person who doesn't believe that mankind is capable of knowing the true nature of God - whether he even exists, or whether he be Muslim, Hindu or Catholic."

"But you were baptized and raised Episcopal, right? Why can't you be a Catholic agnostic instead of an Episcopal agnostic?"

My reaction was just like Pete's: That don't make no sense!

After further reflection, though, I decided to go through with it. So I switched from Episcopal Agnosticism to Catholic Agnosticism, just so my wife could have a full mass at her wedding.

Sorry I can't say I feel your pain. My son's already sleeping in the hammock I set up in the cellar and my wife keeps bugging me to bring the yard hammock to Virginia so she can lay in it. I've even managed to finally get the dog to relax in the hammock.

Best way to get someone to do or use something is to tell them they are not allowed to.

A lesson to live by, there. When it's their idea, they're invested.
